Passport Plug's guide to Get Lost in Florence

Italy. One of the first things that comes to mind when i think of this country is the liveliness of history this beautiful country provides to foreigner when they visit. It also reminds their locals of the social impact to the world. You will definitely take home a lot of knowledge from this country when you return home. A city in particular that you will fall in love with is Florence. From the green, white, and red, marble architecture , to the beautiful opera vocals you'll hear just walking down the street, Florence is one city you can not miss on your trip to the Mediterranean. This is a city where you will want to travel by foot since there is beauty on every corner! Here are some pointers to guide you along the way in this amazing city :

Piazza Del Duomo

One thing you will find out when you travel to Europe is that there are a lot of town squares all over the city. They were designed to bring people together and for people to meet from different neighborhoods throughout the city. However the most iconic one is Piazza Del Duomo ( square of the cathedral). Although the church is not the first one built in Florence but is the most iconic due to its large structure and observatory dome that gives you a 360 view of the city and beyond. Breathtaking views from below of above the Basilica you will be in awe once you see it!

Piazza Della Repubblica

One of my favorite place to hang out at while I am in Florence. Here you will be able to get a cultural experience of what Florence has to offer. is one of the main meeting places in Florence and aimed to be the center of the city since Roman times. Have some coffee and people watch at one of the cafes take a ride on a carousel or have some nutella gelato. Yes I said it. Nutella gelato!

Take a cooking class

If you are a foodie like us here at Passport Plug then you will definitely want to do this! The best thing about being in Florence is the food. Chefs will take you on a walking tour of the local markets as you pick out produce to make your wonderful meal. In detail they will explain why the ingredients chosen are so important when it comes to making a dish. Step-by-step learn how to make dishes like : Chicken Piccata, Gnocchi, Ragu, Veal, and many other flavorful dishes!. Here is one of meals that we made at Passport Plug:(Description: Artichoke Souffle, Gnocchi with Ragu made from pork and veal, and Tiramisu ).

After your meal is prepared the Chefs will compliment your meal with a select wine from one of the local vineyards in order to elevate your taste buds to a new level. It doesn't get any better than this!

Take a day trip to a neighboring city.

Cities like Chianti, Siena , and Pisa are near by train or bus. You can even schedule a private tour with a local to take you as well. Locals are friendly here as long as you greet them with respect. I strongly suggest learning some Italian phrases. People are more likely to speak to you in English if you show a little effort.

These neighboring sites when it comes to food all have a little niche that makes travelers curious to try their cuisines. Although you may find similar ingredients all throughout the country.

The locals take pride on the style and preparation of their food. One one thing you must try when visiting sienna is Frittelle di riso. ( fried rice cake) you can put different toppings like caramel, nutella ,powdered sugar, and cinnamon It is native to the area. Catch locals eating this wonderful pastry with with a nice cup of coffee in the most famous town square in Siena : Piazza del campo. The farmers market is open every Wednesday and is one of the most busiest markets in Tuscany. Make sure to pass by of you are in the area.

Pisa

The world famous optical illusion will be found here about 45 minutes by train from Florence. This city is perfect for a half day trip. Relax by the countryside , or have a picnic by the leaning tower. But most importantly pick up an entire building with your bare hands haha.

Visit the Artisan Shops

The one thing we learned about Italy is that they take pride in the products they make. You will experience just that when you visit Florence. From Shoe shops, to jewelry; custom leather to local food. The shops are a must see! You can find them around the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and Piazza de Santa Maria Novela. All of the shops have large windows for people to pass by and observe the craft of a true artisan. ( ) has a variety of options to you to explore These Shops and so much more

Stop by the San Lorenzo Market

One of our favorite places when we visit Florence for one reason; you will always find a bargain! A garment district of custom leathers and other goods sold by locals. You can definitely find a great price on ties, belts, jackets, handbags, and other accessories if you haggle with the merchants there. On the north side of the market you will find fresh produce and seafood brought in everyday. Definitely a must-see!

Dance the night away!

When people think of Florence they think of beautiful architecture, museums, and beautiful opera. Little do they know this city had a great nightlife scene!. You can find Jazz bars, speakeasies, nightclubs and lounges by the dozen. A few places to check out while you are there:

Yab: Hip-Hop, EDM, Top 40’s

Shots: shot bar with eccentric cocktails and pitchers

Hard Rock Cafe: Live music, Restaurant

Bitter Bar: Custom Cocktails, Great Happy Hour
